Intake is happening now!

You can still come out and join us on Tuesdays at 6:30PM

New Skater Intake

Our new skater intake is designed to teach those who have never skated or have little experience how to skate, fall safely, eventually join a team and play roller derby!

You must be 18+ to join us.

What to Expect

New skater intake is an 8 week course.

The first week of intake will be the mini bootcamp and practices will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, from 6:30 pm until approximately 8:00 pm.  These first three nights will include an off-skates work out, trainer derby (the basics of roller derby played in full protection gear while wearing athletic shoes instead of skates) and basic skating.

After the first week, new skater intake practices are held every Tuesday night (6:30PM - 8:00PM) until skills sign off/graduation.

Skills You Will Learn

During each intake session a set of skills will be demonstrated and explained by the coaching staff.  Skaters will perform the skills

A good overview of the skills you can expect to learn can be seen in the WFTDA Online Education Video series.

What to Bring and What is Provided

Be sure to wear clothes you are comfortable working out in, as well as athletic shoes for the off-skates workout portion and trainer derby.  Bring enough water to last approximately two hours. We recommend at least 32oz - stay hydrated!

It is highly recommended (but not required at the start) to bring a mouth guard.  While you will not be doing any contact skills, it will still provide extra protection.  A simple boil and bite mouth guard from Walmart or Big 5 will be more than adequate to get you through the intake program.

Alamogordo Roller Derby does have loaner gear available for individuals wishing to attend the new skater intake.  Our inventory includes:

  • Quad Skates

  • Helmets

  • Elbow Pads

  • Wrist Guards

  • Knee Pads

Financial Cost

Its totally free to start and try us out. The first calendar month that you join is free after that dues are $10 a month until you are cleared for contact and then it increases to $20 a month. With our loaner gear you also do not have to invest in skates and pads right away. Expect to spend about $150 for a newbie set of skates and pads or about that much for a used higher level set of gear.
